Original Recipe, Not...

The accounts of DJ AM's injuries in the wake of the plane crash that nearly killed him and fellow famous person Travis Barker keep getting downgraded. Initially, it was reported that the DJ's whole face was burned off, then that was revised to 50% of his body including "burns to the head," and now we've found out that he's only burned on 12% of his body. So all you people who are praying for him, you can back off. He doesn't need them as bad as you thought. You can save them for someone who's never been on TV or released a record or fucked Mandy Moore. Barker, however, still needs all the prayers he can get. He needed them before the crash and nothing's really changed.

Well, he might be a dick but he's not far off the mark. This entire story and it's aftermath has been a travesty of rumor, speculation, misinformation and flat-out lies from the get-go.

Immediately after the story broke the AP itself carried the story (complete with quotes attributed to Barker) that the drummer had hurriedly arranged for the Lear jet to rush his party home because his assistant, Chris Baker's wife had gone into labor with their second child.

Only yesterday was it revealed that not only had Chris' wife not gone into labor, she wasn't even PREGNANT.

And, as we now know, the conditions of the two men have been downgraded-- seemingly by the hour. Not because they're improving, but apparently because their condition wasn't as serious as first reported.

DJ AM's condition was (supposedly) so "touch and go" immediately after the crash, he'd been airlifted to the burn center where he was placed in a medically-induced coma. (Travis was said to be "better than DJ" and was taken to the burn center via ambulance)

The following morning, every news agency this side of international dateline reported that the attending physicians stated in a press conference that although both men were in "critical yet stable" condition, "Mr. Goldstein (DJ AM) 'was by far' in worse condition than Mr. Barker."
Now we learn that post-crash, DJ AM was "alert and capable to the extent he was able to phone his mother from the ambulance"... (what happened to the airlift?)

Just a few examples... more to follow undoubtedly -- as the list of fuck-ups is seemingly endless.

The story may be changing because that's the reality of looking after burn victims. Hospital's usually overstate a person's status by a level or two to cover themselves during the person's sometimes upredictable recovery period.

If DJ AM was burnt to the face as reported earlier, his airway would've been at risk due to the swelling that happens with a burn when fluid shifts. If that's the case, he may have been placed on a ventilator which automatically warrants a status of 'critical'.

All in all, burns are very, very nasty. 12% or 50%. And certainly burns to the head and face can be severely disfiguring. Less so if you can keep them covered up, say, on your lower torso.

I agree there are many others who deserve more attention, like the people who died in a the Marriot bombing in Pakistan the same day. But this is Hollywood / America, and these are the gods that are worshipped.
