It Needs To Be Said...

I'm waiting for the feminist outrage over Sarah Silverman's jokes last night at the Movie Awards. The anger over the famous old double-standard: "A man who sleeps around is just being a man, but a woman who sleeps around is a dirty slut." How long have feminists been kicking that one about (and often rightfully)? It was there again last night, in a pair of jokes directed at people who otherwise should never be mentioned in association with each other for any reason: Jack Nicholson and Paris Hilton.

Sarah makes a joke about Jack having "been in all of her favorite actresses," and the crowd roars with approval (as Jack's trademark satyr's grin spreads across his face). Then Sarah unleashes her now-famous Hilton jail gag:

The judge says that it's going to be a no frills thing, and that is ridiculous. She [Paris] is totally gonna get special treatment. As a matter of fact, I heard that to make her feel like more comfortable in prison, the guards are gonna paint the bars to look like penises. I think it's wrong too. I just worry that she's gonna break her teeth on those things...

The crowd reacts to this too - but the tone is different. First they "ooh" at the ballsiness of the line - considering that Paris is right there in the audience - but then they begin to rain their derision down on Paris. A moment ago they cheered Jack's legendary horniness, but now they're growling and hissing at Paris the slut.

Not that it renders Silverman's joke any less funny - I just thought it needed to be brought up.

OK - The way I saw it, she was insulting Jack Nicholson too (granted he played it off as a compliment). Then I saw the crowd jeer SARAH and then one guy yells out "I love you Paris". So, there ya go, my female perspective :)

Seems Sarah is the worthless slut who will say anything to get attention, positive or not.

I was surprised at how flat most of Silverman's jokes seem to fall with the audience. They also looked uncomfortable whenever the cameras fixed on them. Samuel Jackson in particular seemed to want to be elsewhere.

I get your point Crabbie, but why do obnoxious people like Sarah Silverman continue to want to highlight the "hypocrisy" of society by constantly pointing out that men get away with it, but the same behavior is considered slutty in women? The message seems to be that women should get awasy with it too. Ho fucking hum. Both men and women who engage in endless "casual" sex get exactly what they deserve. Nothing of any value whatsoever. I wish big mouths like Silverman would convey THAT message. But she's probably too busy pretending to not be a worthless slut herself. I could be wrong of course, but then rumor has it that she DOES admire Jolie; Queen of Sluts.

Crabbie, I'm usually right on board with you. but WTF on this one.

She made a joke about Jack being a whore, to which the AUDIENCE cheered. Then she made a joke about Paris being a whore, to which the AUDIENCE both cheered and boo'ed.

She seemed like an equal opportunity comedienne to me.

I think people hate Paris for a lot of other reasons besides her being a slut.

For example:

-she's a racist and sometimes homophobe
-she's got a spoiled rotten, entitled attitude but no real talent (getting your picture taken doesn't count)
-she's a moron who didn't even graduate H.S. yet rags on people who attended public schools
-she constantly acts like a total bitch, even to her friends
-she'll do absolutely anything to get attention and press
-driving while drunk and high when she could easily afford a ride
-etc., etc.

This ties in w/ the slutiness thing but everyone knows she sleeps w/ other women's husbands and boyfriends. That's bound to make women despise you. Duh. Normal, sane people find it hard to find even one thing they like about her.

Slutiness is pretty far down the list of reasons I wish she'd die already. Over-exposure is another huge reason people are sick of her.

Jack is, of course, infamous w/ the ladies. But I can't make a big list of other things he's done that disgust me.

That dog is amazingly tolerant.

I agree w/ 12:47 that it is really the audience reaction that is different and not necessarily Silverman's commnents.

Also I think 12:52 is correct that people just hate Paris whereas most people don't find Jack Nicholson to be a completely objectionable human being and that accounts for a lot of the difference in the audience reaction.

i don't see the problem. you can't compare an actor who has starred in many intense, amazing films to some drunk driving, trollop like hilton. they get lots of sex for different reasons. women fuck jack cause he's awesome. men fuck paris because they can. i do agree, however, that there is still a sense of a double standard when it comes to sexual experience in the genders.

Well, I see the Paris PR machine has rolled on over to Crabbie's...

That was a damn good post. It had to be said and it's true. Also Silverman is a giant twat in general.

I dislike everything about Paris Hilton and Sara Silverman. It's like Rosie and the Donald.

What she does is called insult comedy. I can't think of any other women who do insult comedy, but plenty of men. Ergo, she is acting like a male and she is a hot female.
So if there's a question of sexism maybe that's where we should begin. Look @ the comments here, it's really surprising to me.

Silverman's joke about Paris focused on the jail bars being painted as penises (plural?) and the implied multitude of Paris's oral sex excapades.

The joke about Jack was based on Jack's many female conquests. The jokes were aimed at the sexual behavior of both of them.

Her treatment of Nicholson was tongue in cheek, and played for bravado. Her treatment of Paris was bitchy, and mocking. There was a difference and everyone there knew it. If she had made a joke about Nicholson's penis breaking off, or petering out, then it would have been more along the lines of her treatment of Paris. But Silverman is a typical bitch, and reserves the worst treatment for other women.

you also have to wonder about the hypocrisy of someone like sarah who idolizes Jolie who is suppose to represent humanity, and charity, -making cruel, and savage jokes about someone in public for laughs right in front of their face when they cannot defend themselves.

i despise Paris Hilton and all she represents but i draw the line at making fun of them and making them a public laughing stock- that is a whole diffrent kind of cruel i just don't have.

It would have been funny if Paris wasn't there, but it seemed really low to do that to even someone as low as Paris. Kind of like kicking someone when they are down.

It seems like Sarah Silverman is trying to use Paris Hilton to spring board her career and get fame as the woman who humilitated Paris at the MTV awards, and I personally find that kind of opportunism vile.

I'm sorry but I find that comment kind of ridiculous when she was OPENING AT THE MTV MUSIC AWARDS

Rollin', rollin', rollin'
Paris PR rollin'.

You guys must be costing her parents a fortune. The overuse of (and always emphasized) phrases, such as "I despise Paris," "Although Paris is not my Favourite person," followed by "that bad ole' no talent bully Sarah Silverman hurt Paris' feelings when she was down," are all dead give-aways.
In actually, this is all Parasite's fault. Maybe Silverman was offended by her racist, drunken rant? Any celebrity in the hot seat, with an ounce of common sense, would avoid events such as this one, knowing full well they are going to be a direct target. Even Britney Spears is smart enough to figure this one out; when was the last time you have seen her at such an event? Did any of you feel sorry for Lohan and Britney when Paris very publicly humiliated them both? All I heard was the sound of crickets chirping. There is an old adage: Don't dish it out if you can't take it. Someone should send a copy of this to Parasite's jail cell.
Also I'm very surprised at some bloggers whom have taken up the torch for Paris...I wonder what changed their minds?$?$?

I'm sorry but didn't Lindsay Lohan also host the MTV awards one year? and Nicole Richie hosted the Australian MTV awards this year?

I don't have a problem with Sarah Silverman calling Paris Hilton out on the carpet, I just don't think she is very funny. While I was watching this my only thought was: "Who the hell is Sarah Silverman and why is she hosting the MTV Awards?"

Anonymous said...

If Sarah also made fun of Angelina Jolie going around the world colour matching rainbow babies, and starving herself because she sympathizes with the starving masses then I would be a fan. The fact that Sarah worships at the Jolie alter makes her hypocritical and wipes away any respect I could have had for her.

All celebs are hypocritical a**holes. Any finger pointing among them is ludicrous because everyone of them is screwed up. It's like, who's the most f***ed up out of all of them tonight?

Selfish, ignorant, reckless behavior? law breaking? no talent? attention whore?- to everyone of them- pot meet kettle.

Paris Hilton acts and dresses like a slut and revels in it. Now when a comedienne points out the utter ridiculousness that Paris has presented to the public again and again it's a matter for the feminazis to arm themselves over? PLEASE... You know what would be the best way to advance female rights and dignity? Don't associate yourselves with one of the WORST examples of females. If someone had insulted an intelligent and digified woman then fine, but Paris is a slut. She is neither dignified nor intelligent. Perhaps if people didn't dignify the most ignoble actions of people then men AND women would have better examples to advance us all. Poor Paris, shut up! You reap what you sew. You don't reward bad behavior. Anyone who doesn't understand that should NEVER have children. And the argument that women advance themselves by being as base as the worst men is really the argument of a fool.

I have to agree with you Crabbie that it is an interesting study in human nature. It was not so much Sarah Silverman's comment as it was the audience's response to it that made such an impact.

The comment was actually rather lame, and dated, referring to the sex tape video which is many years old, and hardly news anymore. But the audience's reaction to it stunningly illustrated what Paris's "peers" thought of her. It must have been withering.

The reaction was pretty overwhelming. I could hardly imagine that if Sarah announced that some rapper was going to jail on a DUI charge, that he/she would have received such a response.

Obviously the MTV crowd were not 'friends of Paris'. I think as another poster commented, people basicly despise her for many reasons, but overall my reaction to seeing this was not so much a dislike for Sarah, but more of a revoltion to the 'hip' MTV crowd who would embraced a felon, and drug dealer with open arms, yet cheer and ridicule a relatively useless bit of plastic that is Paris Hilton.

Sarah Silverman hosting the MTV Awards:

Silverman: "Well, Ice T is going to jail"

(the crowd roars, clapping, and whistling) (the camera focuses on Ice T as the crowd cheers)

Silverman: "The judge says he is not going to get any special treatment but I don't believe it!"

Silverman: "I heard that the guards are going to try to make his jail cell more comfortable for him." (the crowd is stilling hooting, waiting for the punch line)

Silverman: "I think that's wrong. I heard that they are going to hang dozens of giant water balloons all over his cell to remind him of his wife; Coco's giant fake tits." (the crowd roars, laughing)

Silverman: "I'm afraid that Ice T is going to jerk his dick right off trying to squirt all over all of them." (the crowd explodes, jeering and laughing) (another close up shot of Ice T and his wife)

Silverman: "That's wrong, I think that's wrong."

LMAO at that last post. Hell yeah. Oh and doesn't Silverman sleep with Jimmy Kimmel? That right there would be enough reason to not make fun of anyone else. K, now I have a bad pic in my head and I have to go hurl.

Of course people look at male/females sexual conquests differently.
It's not right. But that's just the way people are, or better said, the way they are taught to think. I don't think that will ever change, even though it should.
Personally I don't think ANYONE who is hopping from one to the next their etire lives can be truly happy in their "personal home-life", (don't know the English word for that) but then again, who am I to judge. *shrug*

I DO think that putting Paris in a comparisation like this makes it go off-balance though. The reaction probably reflected much more how people feel about her, then women-sluttiness in general. It was just a stick to hit her with.
I was a bit dissapointed that the whole racist thing wasn't touched upon though... That's worse then being a slut, imho.

But hey, at least SOMEONE made a public joke about P. That's worth something! Paris deserves every bit of public ridicule she gets.
Ha!

11:16 and 1:16 -- right on the head.

I can't for the life of me imagine why someone who feels that it is cool to attack another someone - and YES, even if it's useless shit Hilton - live, on camera, for cheap and automatic laughs, has any reason to believe he/she's above the level of a human slug. The fact that she's unfunny as hell only makes it easier to see through the ruse.

The irony in this case is that Paris is an obnoxious waste of organs, but no more than any thug/rapper/drugged bad boy wannabe that earns millions preaching their subhuman ways; Silverman just proved that she can add the icing of selective cruelty to the cake.

All in all, par for the course for high-brow crowds like MTV's.

Dah.. it was the movie awards not music awards sorry.

But in any case, it's just insult comedy, I think ppl should get over it.

@11:56 PM

Paris is a worthless piece of shit that deserved every bit of ridicule and humiliation that she got. Fuck her, it was funny.
